Forget the linear career ladder. The modern world of work is a jungle gym of opportunity, where the most interesting and successful careers are often the ones that look the most unconventional from the outside. The idea that you should pick one path and stick to it is becoming increasingly outdated.
At FOUNDRY, our community is living proof of this. We’re home to entrepreneurs and professionals from a huge range of backgrounds, many of whom have taken the scenic route to success. Their stories, shared on our Work This Way podcast, are a powerful reminder that there is no “right” way to build a career.
Here are 7 of the most unconventional career paths we’ve heard, and the surprising lessons they can teach us.
1. The Professional Dancer → The Head of People
The Journey: Haydan spent years as a professional dancer, a career that demands immense discipline, teamwork, and resilience. He then translated those skills into a leadership role in human resources, where his deep understanding of people and performance has made him incredibly effective.
The Lesson: The arts can be one of the best training grounds for a career in business. “Soft skills” like empathy and communication are actually some of the hardest and most valuable skills you can have.
2. The Superyacht Crew Member → The Startup Founder
The Journey: Adam Howie went from managing the intricate details of luxury superyachts to navigating the fast-paced, high-stakes world of startups.
The Lesson: The ability to perform under pressure is a highly transferable skill. Whether you’re dealing with a demanding billionaire on a boat or a demanding investor in a boardroom, the principles of service, attention to detail, and resourcefulness remain the same.
3. The Midwife → The Aesthetics Entrepreneur
The Journey: Karolina Ahmed transitioned from a deeply rewarding but emotionally taxing career as a midwife to founding her own aesthetics practise, Face Up.
The Lesson: You can change your career without changing your core purpose. Karolina still wanted to help people and provide care, but she found a new way to do it that was more aligned with her personal needs and goals.
4. The Law Student → The Fintech Founder
The Journey: Stu McFadden studied law, worked in financial services during a global crisis, and did a stint at a high-growth startup before founding Refundee, a company that helps scam victims recover their money.
The Lesson: Every seemingly random step in your career can be a building block for what comes next. Stuart’s diverse background gave him the unique combination of legal knowledge, financial acumen, and startup grit to build his successful business.
5. The Military Service Member → The Branding Expert
The Journey: After completing two years of mandatory military service in Israel, Adas Goldshtein-Coleman travelled the world, started a preschool, and then founded a branding agency in the UK.
The Lesson: Life experience is often more valuable than formal education. Adas’s travels, her time in the military, and her experience as an immigrant have given her a unique worldview that she now channels into her creative work.
6. The Club Promoter → The Serial Entrepreneur
The Journey: Callum Campbell started out promoting club nights at university. He then used that experience to launch a series of successful ventures, including student fight nights, drive-in cinemas, and public speaking events.
The Lesson: You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to be an entrepreneur. Callum has a knack for taking existing business models and making them better. It’s a reminder that innovation can be incremental.
7. The Adventurer → The Entrepreneur
The Journey: Jake Mattock, a FOUNDRY member, rowed across the Indian Ocean. He now applies the lessons he learned from that extreme adventure to his entrepreneurial ventures.
The Lesson: The mindset required for extreme adventure is the same mindset required for entrepreneurship. Both require resilience, a tolerance for discomfort, and an unwavering belief in your ability to achieve your goal.
These stories are a powerful reminder that the most interesting careers are rarely the most predictable. So, if you’re feeling like your career path is a little unconventional, you’re in good company.
